What we found when we tested a trade

We asked ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's Gemini the questions people ask about electricians in Perth's northern suburbs.

A handful of businesses got most of the recommendations. ChatGPT and Perplexity leaned on trade platforms like hipages and on government licence pages, while Gemini built every answer from Google Maps listings. Read the full study.

What matters most

  • A complete Google profile. The right category, every service you offer, the suburbs you cover and accurate hours, including whether you do after-hours work.
  • Your licence details, everywhere. If your trade is licensed, show your licence number on your website and listings. Some WA trades, such as electrical contractors, must include it in their advertising.
  • The platforms the assistants quote. Sites like hipages and Word of Mouth came up again and again. Being listed there, with reviews, gives the assistants something to point to.
  • Service pages that name your suburbs. "Blocked drains in Joondalup and Wanneroo" gives an assistant something to match to the question.
  • Honest claims. Only say "24/7" or "same day" if it's true. Assistants repeat what you publish, and so do unhappy customers.
